How to Advertise for Respite

Families First does not directly hire applicants for Respite. As such, Families First does not typically extend benefits or training to respite applicants. On rare occasions, special circumstances may lead to agency involvement with Respite care.

Home Providers are considered the employer, while Respite providers are the employee of the Home Provider. Respite applicants will have to interview and fill out a Hire packet through Aris at the Home Providers discretion. A Respite hire packet can be found here.

Finding the right applicant may not be the easiest task. If you are seeking guidance on how to find applicants for weekend respite, consider the following.

Post on social media, create physical flyers, ask acquaintances, or use an online job posting site. Indeed is a well-known free job posting site.

How to Write a Respite Ad

  • Start with a location. Where are you hoping to find candidates?

  • Make sure to Include a Job description, something like: We are seeking to identify a respite provider to care for an individual living with disabilities. The candidate would be expected to have this individual stay in their home for one weekend per month or more, hourly, and/or daily. Knowledge of American Sign Language, CPR/First Aid is a plus but not required. Respite hourly range $16 -$23 an hour. Respite Overnight range (24hrs) $200-$250. Candidates for this position must have a spare bedroom in their home, and be able to pass a background check. The ideal candidate for this position will have experience working with people with disabilities, promoting independent living skills, and practicing patience.   • Be Sure to Include Parameters/Specifics: Part-time, In-person, overnights/weekends required, willingness to travel around Windham County, Willingness to perform personal care, hygiene support, behavioral support, and/or medication administration. Applicants should be compassionate, patient, and understanding.

  • Analyze Candidate Resumes & Applications: Ask applicants questions about their experience and desired schedule. Viable candidates are those that are caring and have a safe home environment. Consider if the candidate has a reliable vehicle, a spare bedroom, children, additional roommates, and/or pets. Once you select a candidate, let your Families First case manager / service coordinator know.
